Costco Gas Prices in the United States

Most Costco warehouses in the United States have a gas station out front — about 570 of the 616. Fuel margins are thin on purpose. The membership covers the profit, the fuel is bought from the same regional terminals as the name-brand stations down the road, and the posted price typically lands 20 to 40 cents a gallon below them. A new warehouse tends to pull the neighborhood down with it, though those stations almost never match.

What you pay still depends on which warehouse you visit. Each station sets its own price, generally once a day, and two locations in the same metro can differ by 10 cents or more. The cheaper one is not always the one you would expect — the averages and rankings on this page are there for that reason.

The fuel is Kirkland Signature and Top Tier certified: regular (87) and premium (91 or 93, depending on the region) at every station, diesel at many, no mid-grade. A membership card is required to pump; payment is Visa, debit, or a Costco Shop Card, and the gas station typically keeps longer hours than the warehouse. At busy locations, the queue is part of the deal, especially on weekends.

The ranking is regular gasoline only, and it reshuffles. Each warehouse prices itself, so a station that looks like a steal on Monday can be unremarkable by Friday. Premium and diesel, where they are sold, do not always follow the same order.

A Costco gas station is set up to move cars, not to browse. Lanes are one-way, the hoses reach either side of the vehicle, and a safety attendant is on site; there is no convenience store and no cash. Hours typically start around 6 a.m. on weekdays and run later than the warehouse, with a shorter schedule on weekends. The pumps close on the same major holidays — New Year's, Easter, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Costco is the only warehouse club that sells Top Tier gasoline at every location, so the cheap pump is not a lesser grade. Card payments take a hold of up to $150 until the fill posts, and the Executive 2% reward does not apply to gasoline.
