Is Costco premium gas worth it?
Only if your car calls for it. If the owner’s manual or fuel door says premium is required, use it: low octane can cause knock that damages the engine over time. If premium is only recommended, regular is safe, with a small loss of power and economy. If the car is built for regular, premium adds nothing; AAA’s testing found no meaningful gain in power, economy or emissions.
It is not a cleaner fuel. Costco puts the same Top Tier detergent package in both grades. The only difference is octane.
What the habit costs. For a driver covering 12,000 miles a year at 25 mpg (480 gallons), choosing premium at today’s gaps adds:
| Where | Premium gap | Extra per year |
|---|---|---|
| US median | +$0.670/gal | about $322 |
| Utah | +$0.400/gal | about $192 |
| Michigan | +$1.210/gal | about $581 |

Costco premium gas: common questions

Yes. Every Costco gas station sells Kirkland Signature premium alongside regular. Costco describes it as typically 91 octane; in parts of the East and Midwest it can be 93. The pump label shows the exact number.
How much is premium gas at Costco?

Why is the premium gap bigger in some states?
In Utah premium runs a median $0.400 over regular; in Michigan it is $1.210. The West mostly sells 91 premium, while Great Lakes markets more often carry 93, which costs more to make. Local competition matters too.
