Costco gas in Canada works on the opposite card rule to the US: the pump that happily takes a Visa in Washington State will turn it away in Langley. This guide covers what the Canadian Costco gas bars we track accept in 2026, how Visa Debit and tap work, where the "$100 limit" idea comes from, which Mastercard earns the most, and what Visa and Amex holders can do instead. Short answer: Canadian Costco gas bars accept Mastercard (credit and debit, from any issuer), Canadian debit cards on Interac, and physical Costco Shop Cards. They do not accept Visa credit cards, American Express, cash, cheques or digital Shop Cards. The pump pre-authorizes the lower of your card's limit or $200, so there is no Costco-set $100 cap.

What payment methods does Costco gas accept in Canada?

Costco.ca lists three payment types for its gas stations, and the list is the same at every Canadian gas bar, from British Columbia to Newfoundland. We checked Costco Canada's payment page and its gasoline Q&A on September 30, 2026.

Costco's own wording: its gas station is "entirely self-serve, with pay-at-the-pump technology. We accept MasterCard, Canadian debit cards and Costco Shop Cards." Does Costco gas take Visa in Canada?

No, not Visa credit. Costco Canada's gas bars and warehouses take Mastercard as their only credit card network. Any Visa credit card, including premium travel cards, will be declined at the pump.

The one place Costco Canada takes Visa is online. Costco.ca lists Visa alongside Mastercard, which makes the Shop Card workaround below possible.

Can you use a Visa Debit card at Costco gas in Canada?

Usually yes, because most Canadian "Visa Debit" cards are really Interac debit cards with a Visa logo added. CIBC, Scotiabank and TD issue co-badged cards: when you insert the card and enter your PIN at a Canadian merchant, the payment runs on Interac, and the Visa side is used for online, phone and foreign purchases. Costco accepts Canadian debit, so the pump sees an ordinary Interac payment.

The exception is a Visa Debit number that is not tied to a physical Interac card. RBC, for example, has issued its Visa Debit as a separate virtual number for online use, while your regular client card handles in-person purchases. Use the physical bank card at the pump, not a Visa Debit number saved in a wallet.

Can you use Mastercard at Costco gas?

Yes, any Mastercard. It does not have to be the CIBC Costco Mastercard. A Rogers, Tangerine, PC Financial, BMO or other bank's Mastercard all run on the same network and work the same way at the pump.

The Costco-branded card has one convenience: Costco says that when you insert "a membership card or a co-branded MasterCard", the pump reads your membership number from it. With any other Mastercard, you insert your membership card first, then pay.

Why doesn't Costco gas take Visa in Canada?

Costco signs an exclusive deal with one card network per country in return for very low card fees. Costco Canada's gasoline Q&A says its "exclusive agreement with MasterCard helps to ensure the lowest transaction fees available", which it says helps keep prices low.

Canada's history runs opposite to the US. Costco Canada accepted only American Express until the end of 2014, then switched to Mastercard on January 1, 2015, with Capital One as the issuer of the Costco card. In March 2022, CIBC became the exclusive issuer of the Costco Mastercard in Canada. The network stayed Mastercard throughout. In the US, Costco moved from Amex to Visa in 2016, which is why the two countries now accept different cards.

Is there a $100 limit at Costco gas in Canada?

No, Costco does not cap a fill at $100. Its Canadian gasoline Q&A says the amount pre-authorized before fuelling is "the lower of the dollar limit issued by the card issuer or $200." After you hang up the nozzle, Costco sends the actual amount, and your bank is responsible for releasing the difference.

At the Canadian average of 173.0¢/L in our September 29, 2026 reading, $200 buys about 115 litres of regular. Provincial averages ranged from 160.7¢/L in Alberta and 167.3¢/L in Ontario to 184.0¢/L in Quebec. At the St. John's gas bar, our most expensive in Canada at 216.9¢/L, it still covers about 92 litres. A $100 hold, by comparison, stops at about 58 litres at the national average, which a large pickup or SUV can exceed.

So why do people search "costco gas limit $100"? Three reasons come up:

  • Your card sets a lower limit. Costco uses whichever is lower, so if your bank caps pay-at-the-pump authorizations near $100, the pump stops there. That limit is your bank's, not Costco's.
  • Daily debit limits. An Interac card with a low daily purchase limit, or not enough money in the account to cover the hold, gets "Authorization Declined" at the pump, according to Costco.
  • Old tap limits. Before April 2020, contactless payments in Canada were capped at $100. Members on RedFlagDeals reported pumps failing with tapped cards back then, traced to that limit. Card networks and banks have raised contactless limits since, but each bank sets its own, so inserting the card and entering your PIN is the safer choice for a big fill.

If a pump stops before your tank is full, members report that starting a new transaction works. The US pumps use a different number: Costco's US FAQ says holds "may be up to $150".

How long does a Costco gas hold stay on a debit card?

Normally it drops off quickly, but Costco Canada says a hold can sometimes remain "for several days" if the bank or Mastercard does not release it correctly, and that Costco cannot release holds manually. Call the number on the back of your card if one lingers. On debit, the hold ties up money in your chequing account until it clears.

Can you tap or use Apple Pay at Costco gas in Canada?

It is not officially listed. Costco Canada names Apple Pay as a payment method in its warehouses, but not at its gas stations, and its gasoline Q&A says "the use of mobile devices is prohibited at Costco gas stations" for safety. Google Pay and Samsung Pay are not listed anywhere for Costco Canada. The US rules are different; see does Costco gas take Apple Pay.

What members report on RedFlagDeals is more mixed than the official list. Tapping a physical CIBC Costco Mastercard at the pump has worked for some members and did both the membership check and the payment in one step. Tapping a phone with the Costco Mastercard loaded into Google Wallet or Apple Wallet was reported to trigger a "Costco Members Only" prompt, because the wallet uses a different card number that the pump cannot match to a membership. The workaround members describe is to insert your physical membership card first.

Our advice: insert a physical card and use your PIN. Treat tap and phone wallets as something that may work, not something Costco promises.

Can you use a Costco gift card (Shop Card) for gas?

Yes, if it is a physical Costco Shop Card. Costco Canada's Shop Card FAQ says digital Shop Cards "cannot be redeemed at Self-Checkout, Food Court Kiosks or the Gas Stations." Shop Cards come in amounts from $50 to $2,000 and are sold only to members, in the warehouse or on Costco.ca. There is no separate Costco "gas gift card"; the Shop Card is it.

How to pay for Costco gas with a Visa or Amex

Use your Visa to buy a physical Shop Card online, then pay at the pump with the Shop Card. There are three ways to get one:

  1. Order a physical Shop Card on Costco.ca with a Visa or Mastercard. Costco mails it by standard delivery with no tracking, and says to allow about 7 to 10 business days. Order well before you need it.
  2. Buy a digital Shop Card on Costco.ca, then swap it. Digital cards usually arrive by email within 24 hours. Costco's FAQ says you can take a digital card to a warehouse and use it to buy a physical Shop Card of the same value.
  3. Buy a physical Shop Card at a warehouse register with an accepted in-warehouse method: Mastercard, debit, cash, a personal cheque or Apple Pay. This is the route for cash-only drivers.

Amex cannot buy a Shop Card anywhere at Costco Canada, since neither the warehouse nor Costco.ca takes it. A Visa used this way earns its regular rate, not a gas bonus, because the purchase is a Costco.ca order rather than a fuel purchase.

What is the best card for Costco gas in Canada?

For most members it is the CIBC Costco Mastercard. It has no annual fee and, per CIBC's page and published terms as of September 2026, earns:

  • 3% at Costco gas stations in Canada (and at restaurants).
  • 2% at other gas stations, EV charging and Costco.ca.
  • 1% on everything else, including in the warehouse.

Card reviewers report that the 3% Costco gas rate and 2% other gas rate share a cap: the first $5,000 of net gas and EV purchases each calendar year, then 1%. CIBC's card page says only that there is "no limit to the total cash back you can earn," so check the card's terms. That is up to $150 a year at the top rate. Cash back arrives once a year, as a certificate in January for use at Costco Canada.

In practice, a 60-litre fill at our September 29, 2026 average of 173.0¢/L costs about $103.80, and 3% back is about $3.11, or roughly 5.2¢/L. The $5,000 cap covers about 2,890 litres a year at that price.

Can you use a Canadian card at a US Costco gas station?

The rule follows the country of the pump, not your card. At a US Costco, a Canadian-issued Visa credit card works and your CIBC Costco Mastercard does not. Do you get a receipt at Costco gas in Canada?

Yes. The pump offers a printed receipt when you finish, and Costco's Q&A refers to "the actual amount for the fuel purchased as shown on the receipt." Keep it if you claim fuel as a business expense.
